Mike McConville

Upon leaving school in the mid 70’s I did very little exercise for 10 years, I then joined a local junior rugby club in Sale. It was here that cycling became part of my everyday life as MV Rugby club decided to do a sponsored bike ride from Chester RFU to MVRFCC in Sale, not just on any old bike but on a 16 seater. A lot of rugby player took to the road that day. In order to gain the required level of fitness for this venture I purchased a second hand road bike for £5 and started cycling to and from work everyday.

Cycling was a means of keeping fit, and in the summers I would enjoy taking part in the Manchester to Blackpool, Liverpool Chester

Liverpool, and the Manchester 100 bike rides.

In 2004 I met Phil Holden, a very inspiring young man, at a spinning class at Altrincham Leisure Centre, he was on the way back to fitness after a leg injury, he persuaded me to come and join Seamons CC.

Cycling has become an even bigger part since then. I go out with the half day section on a Sunday morning, there is a lot of me to get up the hills so I am always last to the top of Gunhill, The Brick Works, Long Hill etc, some one has to be, and they always wait 2 or 3 minutes for me. I was fit enough in 2007 and 2008 to take part in the national 24 hr championship, so I went from doing club 10 mile and 25 mile time trails to a 24 hour time trial in one leap.

Shortly after joining the club I was elected Time Trial Secretary, someone must have thought I was doing a reasonable job of organising the time trial calendar  for the last 4 years and all that goes with it because at the 2008 AGM I was given the honour of being elected chairman of the club.
